Question: Should I buy a high security lock, are they safer?
Answer: High security locks are better constructed, they are very hard to pick and are not comprimised by bumping. But my answer is No! In years of police work I found 95% of burglaries were by breaking a window, kicking a door or twisting a lock with pliers.
Question: A locksmith told me that I can increase my level of security by having him install lock cylinders with a restricted keyway. Is this a good idea?
Answer: Absolutely not! Restricted keyways were designed to protect commercial property; employees could not have keys made. Unscrupulous locksmiths started using the restricted keyways to take advantage of the consumer, the customer was forced to go back to that locksmith to have repairs, re-keying or even the simplest need such as having a key made! |
